“On the Line” This project has been over nine years in the making. It started as a simple photo essay about something that changed my life: picking up soccer after starting a family. When I joined a league of women soccer players my inner Athena sprung forth. Suddenly, armed with cleats on one shoulder, a camera on the other, I was a warrior, if just for one night. As it turned out, I was not alone. Through this project, documenting the trials and tribulations of friends, neighbors, enemies as joined together by love of the sport, I have been able to tear down the walls between self-sacrifice and self-fulfillment. Our lives – adventures, kids, loves, dreams, marriages, deaths, divorces – are universal. Through paintings, photographs, and mixed media, a gallery of images hangs on a clothesline, pinned with wooden clothespins, to tell the story of my life. Openly displayed, out on the line, like laundry, after being kept tucked away for long seasons of neglect – airing out. Fresh, free and open. A story with soul. |
